An independent testing laboratory has filed a petition with the FDA asking for a recall of these products, all of which have benzoyl peroxide as the active ingredient. Benzene is a carcinogen that can cause leukemia in high amounts and has been found in several popular consumer products over the past few years, raising concerns about product safety.
Valisure LLC, the testing laboratory behind the petition, has gained prominence in testing drug products for safety. The FDA is reviewing the data presented in the petition before taking any action. Some acne treatments contain benzene levels up to nine times higher than the FDA limit, especially when exposed to high temperatures over time. Proactiv, Target, and Clinique are among the brands with products that have high levels of benzene.
Several companies, including Johnson & Johnson, Unilever, and Procter & Gamble, have recalled products in the past due to benzene contamination. Acne is a common skin condition affecting millions of people each year, with over-the-counter treatments totaling $1 billion in sales last year. Benzoyl peroxide is a recommended treatment for acne, but the contamination of benzene arises from its breakdown.
Valisure has been known for its investigations into product safety, including the discovery of contamination in heartburn drug Zantac. The FDA has questioned Valisure’s testing methods in the past but the laboratory stands behind its certification from the International Organization for Standardization. Following previous benzene findings, the FDA has warned companies to assess the risk of benzene forming in their products.
US Representative Rosa DeLauro has expressed concern over the benzene contamination in acne treatments and has pushed for legislation to empower the FDA to recall dangerous drugs. Valisure’s testing has shown that even unopened acne products can leak high levels of benzene when exposed to high temperatures. The EPA and FDA have both acknowledged the risks associated with benzene exposure.
